Row of shop houses along Jalan Besar.
The 1925 Microbrewery & Restaurant is situated in a shop house along Jalan Besar. As it’s name suggests, the place specializes in home-brewed beer with extract specially flown in from the Czech Republic & Australia. Along with all the beer, the restaurant also offers up an extensive list of dishes to pair with their beer, ranging from bar grub to more substantial dishes like burgers & pastas.

Second level of 1925.
The 1925 Microbrewery & Restaurant was founded by an uncle & nephew team, King Joey Yeo & Ivan Yeo respectively. The creation of the restaurant was due to King Joey’s passion for home brewing & Ivan’s passion for cooking & design. The idea for the restaurant was conceived a few years ago & it only came to fruition last year, when both uncle & nephew came together to start the business.
Aesthetic
The name “1925” derived from the birth year of Ivan’s grandfather, who is also King Joey’s father. Ivan’s grandfather used to be a grocer, making sure his customers got the best of the best when it came to ingredients, which is the same spirit they hope to embody in their establishment. To quote Ivan himself, – “Only the best and freshest for our customers!”
The design of the restaurant is kept very industrial-vintage, retaining the look of the original walls of the shop house. While most “hip” cafes & bistros tend to opt towards this more affordable choice of design, 1925 seems to have done it well, merging their microbrewery & restaurant seamlessly with the old interior. The furniture used in the place have an essence of the 1960s, something like what you see in Mad Men. (The television series.)
The first level houses the bar & the vats of the microbrewery. The place feels pretty much feels like an underground brewery, something out of wine country. While the first level is filled with high tables & bar stools, the second level has more casual seats for lounging. The second floor is also more dedicated to wine tasting.

All day menu of 1925.
Food
To pair their beer with, 1925 offers quite an extensive food menu. The menu is split into two categories, one for Starters, one for Entrées. Their starters are mostly bar grub, like truffle fries, potato skins, wings & sliders. For their entrées, it ranges from pastas to burgers to meats. 1925 also offers a special lunch menu for weekdays & a brunch menu that is only for weekends. You can have a look at those menus on their website.
Prices for 1925 are geared towards the higher end. Like most places, prices for their starters can hit entrée pricing. (Which I’m not a fan of.) 1925’s mains all hover around 20 bucks, which is common for a bar/restaurant like this. If you’re looking for more affordable options, I would recommend their weekday lunch menu, with courses priced around $10.90. 1925 does charge GST & service fees, so bear that in mind as well.

![Ziegfield Follies ($16) Absolut Vanilla, Boiron Strawberry Puree, Heavy Cream, Gomme Syrup, Kapiti Straw Ice-cream Along with their home-brewed beer, they also have drinks mixed by their in-house mixologist. This is 1925's signature drink. It's considered to be a dessert cocktail. I really liked it, it had a taste of strawberry ice-cream/smoothie. It's a great guilt-free replacement for dessert. They also have a non-alcoholic version. [Unfortunately, I did not try any of their beers. Not a fan of that beverage. Yes.., I am a guy who likes girly drinks. There, I said it!]](http://suchafatty.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/dsc0026.jpg?w=730&h=1024)

![Truffle Fries ($8) Tossed in secret spice, served with Truffle Mayo Dip I'm at that point where I'm getting sick of Truffle Fries, but 1925's version looked promising. I was torn between the truffle & Wasabi fries but ended up orderly the former. Their fries were definitely pretty good. The truffle mayo dip was great & had a strong truffle taste. Their fries were definitely pretty good. The truffle mayo dip was great & had a strong truffle taste. They also offer a Mixed Fries Sampler with three types of fries. My original plan was to order that, but it would have been too much for me as it’s best to be shared among a group of people.

![Chicken Skins ($12) I know, I know..., 12 bucks for chicken skins?! Are you crazy?! My companion's with you on this. I can't help it, I love chicken skins! I'm the type of guy who thinks people are crazy when they tear off the skin of the chicken & NOT eat it. These were really good. Fried chicken skins, what's not to like? They are also coated with a secret spice. The small lemon wedges add a nice slight kick to the dish. I do admit that this is my guilty pleasure. [To quote my companion - "12 bucks? You could order a whole chicken for 12 bucks.]](http://suchafatty.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/dsc0057.jpg?w=1024&h=682)

![Crispy Egg Aglio Olio ($16.90) Spaghetti, Chilli, Garlic, Olive Oil, Crispy This is one of 1925's unique dishes. The taste of the spaghetti does take some getting used to. I took a first bite & found the taste quite odd. (Not in a bad way.) Once you're into it, it's actually quite good. The only downside is that the dish is quite oily, perhaps due to the nature of the crispy egg - they tend to soak up & retain oil like a sponge. I still like the dish though, it's fresh & different.](http://suchafatty.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/dsc0105.jpg?w=1024&h=682)

![Beef Paddle ($28) 300 grams of Grilled Prime Ribeye, served with Red Wine & Black Pepper sauces Any meat lover would know that in order to get a good slab of meat, they have to pay the price. 1925's Beef Paddle makes it worth it though. Lovely tender slices of beef. I chose to go with a doneness of "Medium". Delicious, soft, tender. Together with the red wine sauce, it was like eating Beef Bourguignon. Worth A Visit/Revisit?
If you are a fan of good beer & great grub, do check out The 1925 Microbrewery & Restaurant. I really loved their food, even if it’s a tad pricey. If you are on budget but would like to pay 1925 a visit, I do recommend trying either their weekday lunch promo or their weekend brunch. The place has garnered quite a bit of popularity among the working class, with the place usually packed during the night.
